2023 Rudd Oakville Estate Samantha's Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml

$250

The 2023 Rudd Oakville Estate Samantha’s Cabernet Sauvignon is remarkably nuanced and profoundly expressive, unfolding with striking intensity. Layers of black cherry, perfectly ripened plum, and wild blackberries shape the aromatics with a delicate thread of restrained barrel spice which feels instantly familiar and evokes a sense of warmth. A distinctive iron-rich mineral note imparts an unmistakable sense of place, while undertones of freshly picked rosemary and dried violets are interwoven with precision and intricacy. The entry is expansive on the palate and yet impeccably composed, delivering a seamless progression of black cherry, vibrant red currant, and late-summer blackberry. Throughout the midpalate, crème de cassis and licorice pastille lend opulence and dimension, beautifully counterbalanced by refined notes of graphite and dark cocoa. Firm, sculpted tannins provide impressive structure, yet the texture is remarkably polished, carrying the wine through a long, persistent finish that lingers with the luxurious impression of crushed velvet. Its character is captivating now, yet the true pleasure may lie in the depth and complexity that years in the cellar will reveal.

The 2023 vintage was one of the longest growing seasons in more than a decade.

With steady and mild weather throughout the season, coupled with a balanced crop load, 2023 had all the hallmarks of a memorable vintage. Winter and spring rains led to saturated soil and optimal timing for budbreak. Idyllic spring weather maintained healthy canopy growth through bloom and set, while relatively cool weather throughout the growing season allowed sugar accumulation and phenolic ripeness to occur in tandem. The first pick of Cabernet Sauvignon in Oakville occurred on September 21st, which in more recent vintages began at the beginning of September. These extra days allowed for extended ripening of sugars, acids, and tannins—a winemaker’s dream. The fruit continued to be slowly harvested by hand by our in-house vineyard crew over the next 22 days, with the final pick taking place on October 13th.
